The Varsity Boys' Basketball team played New Plymouth in the district championship. The boys came out a little slow, as both teams struggled to get their offense going. The score for the initial few minutes of first half was low, and neither team was able to take the momentum. That changed with around four minutes left in the first quarter. Gill continued to steal the ball and caused trouble for New Plymouth's. Harmon hit back to back shots, and with the rest of the team also adding points (Steele with 9 in the first half), the score gap continued to grow. New Plymouth was able to get a few last minute baskets to get the score within six at half, 29-23, Charger lead.
In the second half, the Chargers shut New Plymouth down. The Pilgrims didn't make a point until a pair of free throws halfway into the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Chargers continued to push, Harmon hitting a step-back midrange shot and Gill with a three-pointer. With just under a minute left, Gill added a block that sent the ball into the waiting hands of Smith, who ran down the floor and converted it into two free-throw attempts. The score going into the final quarter was 39-25, Cole Valley leading by 14.
For the last eight minutes of the game, the Chargers slowed the game down, scoring when available. New Plymouth scored nine points but was ultimately unable to bridge the gap. The fourth quarter wrapped up, 48-34, Chargers' victory.
Lakota Steele led with 11 points, Hunter Gill with 10, and Garrett Smith with 8.
Congratulations to the boys' varsity basketball team, three-peat district champions! Their next game will be in the State Playoffs against Malad, Thursday, March 5, at 6:15 PM, Capital High School.
